The subtropical breeding program in Australia is led by Mark Herrington and has the main research centre at the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries’ (QDPI&F), Maroochy Research Station Nambour Queensland Australia.  This centre is near sea level at 27°S, 153°E.  Average maximum 24 °C, mininum 8°C with no days having a minimum of less than zero ≤O °C.  Rainfall during season varies from 48-140 mm/month.

Plants are evaluated on non-fumigated soil using bare rooted, leaf-on (green-leaf) runners, but with an increasing use of plug plants.

The program is based on phenotypic recurrent selection with the broad objectives of:

  • maximising consumer appeal and enjoyment (flavor and aromatics)
  • maximising consumer choice (a variety of flavors)
  • reducing production costs (moderate to large fruit size, easily accessible fruit)
  • maximising early yield and pack-out percentage (uniform attractive  fruit)
